18 Cool Tesla Features You Should Know About

Teslas are sleek, sophisticated 100% electric vehicles that have become a popular choice for those interested in a fun, innovative driving experience. Plus, they’re often more sustainable than gas-powered vehicles, which is a big draw for drivers looking to reduce their carbon footprint.

Founded in 2003 by a group of Silicon Valley engineers, the company is now worth more than $700 billion and has produced almost 2 million vehicles since 2009. Tesla says it best: “After safety, our goal is to make every Tesla the most fun you could possibly have in a vehicle.”

So, what makes driving the Tesla so much fun? Let’s find out.

18 Cool Tesla Features

Note: These features may not be available on every model.

1. Autopilot

The Tesla is as close as it gets to a self-driving car. The autopilot capability features vision processing and eight cameras that provide a 360-degree view of your vehicle. Your Tesla can steer, accelerate, and brake on its own, but the autopilot feature is not intended to take your place behind the wheel — only to reduce your workload as a driver.

2. “Caraoke”

If you love James Cordon’s “Carpool Karaoke” segment on late-night TV, this fun sing-along Tesla feature is for you. As part of the vehicle’s software update in 2019, Caraoke allows you to sing along to pre-programmed songs (with or without the lyrics — your choice!). Note: This feature is for passenger use only or if the vehicle is in park.

3. Autopark

Do you avoid parallel parking? You aren’t alone, and now with Tesla’s autopark, your vehicle will easily maneuver into parallel and perpendicular parking spaces.

4. Auto lane change

This feature is part of Tesla’s Autosteer capability on the Tesla Model 3, which allows you to use your turn signals to move your vehicle into an adjacent lane.

5. Smart Summons

With a click of a button, you can automatically retrieve your car. This means avoiding awkward (or failed) attempts at navigating tight parking spots. For example, if your Tesla is parked right up against another vehicle with little room to maneuver into the driver’s seat, you can activate Smart Summons so that your vehicle will back up. Problem solved!

6. Easter eggs

One of the most exciting aspects of a Tesla are the number of “Easter eggs” — fun, funny, and quirky features that enhance the overall driving and passenger experience. For example, there’s the flashing rainbow charging port, “Santa mode” that turns your vehicle into a sleigh with reindeer on the touchscreen, and a psychedelic cowbell road that’s an ode to the Mario Kart video game.

7. Bioweapon Defense Mode

Tesla’s Bioweapon Defense Mode, which is only available on certain models, features a HEPA filter that prevents toxic chemicals such as pollution and bacteria from finding their way into the vehicle’s cabin. It also prevents pollen from sneaking into your driving space.

8. Touchscreen

Tesla’s touchscreen is similar to a smartphone. Unique features include the ability to tap the screen to release your trunk or charge port. You can also adjust the position of the airflow. A fully interactive map allows you to drag your finger across the screen or pinch to zoom in — similar to using a map app. Tesla’s supercharger stations are marked as easy-to-find red pins on the map, which means you’ll always know the location of your nearest charge.

9. Video games, streaming services, and web browser

The Tesla has no shortage of entertainment options. You can play various streaming services, such as Netflix, YouTube, or Hulu while the vehicle is parked. Some video games allow you to use the steering wheel buttons to play arcade games. You also have the option of surfing the web.

10. Sentry Mode

This added layer of protection will give you peace of mind when you aren’t in the presence of your vehicle. Similar to a home alarm system, Sentry Mode detects potential threats and issues either an alert or alarm, depending on the seriousness of the violation. An alert displays a message on the touchscreen that the vehicle’s cameras are recording. If an audible alarm is activated, the dashboard becomes bright, and loud music blares from the speakers. Tesla owners will also receive an alert on their phone via the mobile app.

11. Key options

There are five ways to unlock your Tesla. Each vehicle comes equipped with two pre-programmed key cards — similar to a hotel key or credit card. You can also download an app that allows you to turn on your Tesla from your smartphone — or you can control vehicle access through a smart watch. Another option is the Tesla key fob, which comes with certain models. (Bonus: The key fob is shaped like a Tesla car.) If you’re looking for a funky piece of jewelry that does double duty, you can opt for a Tesla smart ring.

12. Unique doors

Think Back to the Future with DeLorean-style “falcon-wing” doors that are available on the Model X.

13. Tesla app

The Tesla app is your one-stop-shop for vehicle-related data, service, and statistics. Access your mileage stats, schedule service, request roadside assistance, view your charging history, or defrost your vehicle with a click of a button — the app is a must-have for Tesla owners.

14. Dog Mode

This canine-friendly feature means you never have to worry about your pet becoming too warm or cold in the car. Similar to a thermostat, you can set the interior temperature, which is controlled by the HVAC system. As a bonus, Tesla will display a message on the larger center screen inside the vehicle that tells anyones nearby that your dog is perfectly safe.

15. Camp Mode

Need an impromptu campsite? Waiting out a thunderstorm? Look no further than your own vehicle. Tesla’s Camp Mode allows you to maintain an internal temperature and power your electronics through USB ports and low voltage outlets. Your lighting will be maintained so that you play music, browse the Internet, or watch your favorite TV show through the touchscreen.

16. Plaid Mode

Tesla models that are equipped with Plaid Mode “have batteries and three electric motors that can produce up to 1,020 horsepower and can take the car from zero to 60 miles an hour in just two seconds.” In January 2022 Tesla rolled out the Plaid Track Mode on Model S Plaid vehicles.

17. Ludicrous Plus Mode

This feature allows the Tesla to heat its battery to an ideal temperature, which allows you to hit maximum speeds. Named after a reference from the popular ‘80s movie Spaceballs, Ludicrous Plus Mode gives you that racecar driver-feel. It’s important to note that this feature should only be used safely, of course.

18. “Emissions Testing” Mode

If you have always enjoyed a Whoopee cushion joke, you will be a fan of this good-humored Tesla feature. With “emissions testing” mode, you can mimic the sound of flatulence — even choosing from which speaker your special sounds will emanate.

Types of Tesla Models

There are four Tesla models: Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y. Each differs in base price, mileage range, number of seats, cargo capacity, and drivetrain. Here’s a quick overview of each:

  • Tesla Model 3 — This small sedan is the most affordable option with a starting price for new vehicles around $46,000. Newer models have rear-wheel drive and an EPA estimated range of 315 miles with seating for five.
  • Tesla Model Y — There are two options for this mid-size Tesla SUV: Model Y Performance and Model Y Long Range. Both vehicles are similar in price and provide a range of 300-330 miles. The Standard Range model was discontinued in 2022 but pre-owned models are still available.
  • Tesla Model S — The Model S has a base price of $104,990 for a new model; the Model S Plaid’s price tag is higher at $135,990. The main difference between the models is horsepower.
  • Tesla Model X — Choose from the Model X ($120,990 for a new 2022 vehicle) or the Model X Plaid ($138,990). This SUV offers a cargo capacity of 88 cubic feet with standard seating for five; you can add up to two extra seats for an additional cost.

Considerations When Buying a Tesla

As you think about purchasing a Tesla, keep these important questions in mind:

  • How will you charge your vehicle? A Type C/F (220-240 V) adapter is included with the purchase of every Tesla. Users also have the option of installing home charging equipment with a Tesla-certified electrician. The Tesla app allows you to find one of the company’s 35,000 Supercharger stations.
  • Are you able to test drive the Tesla before purchasing? Even though the Tesla is electric, it’s still a vehicle — and one you should take for a test drive, if possible. See how the Tesla handles on highways and backroads to determine if it’s a comfortable, enjoyable driving experience.
  • How far will a single charge take you? Each year and model will offer a slightly different charging range.
  • What is the total cost of ownership? The initial price tag of a Tesla will likely be higher than a gas-powered vehicle, but you need to keep the total cost of ownership in mind. This includes the purchase price, maintenance, cost of charging equipment, how much you will estimate saving in fuel and engine oil, and Tesla’s impact on your carbon footprint.
